Dorthea Hall "Mackie" Kernan, 83, died peacefully at home on October 2, 2012 with her loved ones by her side. She was born in Utica, NY, on July 10, 1929, the daughter of H. Douglas and Dorthea Geer Hall. As a young girl she attended New Hartford schools, and was a graduate of Abbot Academy in Andover, MA, and Briarcliff Junior College, Briarcliff Manor, NY. Upon completing her education she was employed by the firm of Ferris, Hughes, Dorrance and Groben in Utica. On August 4, 1951, Mackie married Leslie W. Kernan, with whom she recently celebrated 61 loving years of marriage. Mackie was a devoted wife and mother, creator of a warm and happy home and countless occasions filled with love and laughter, family and friends. She was a dedicated volunteer in her community and in her church, devoting her time and talent selflessly, without desire or need of recognition, satisfied in knowing she'd contributed to happy occasions, successful events and meaningful causes. As a devout member of Grace Church in Utica, Mackie was an active member of the Grace Church Altar Society, a past member of its Vestry and various committees, and a loyal member of its Wednesday morning special set, the St. Hubert's Society. She was also a member of the Ladies Book Club, and a lifelong volunteer in many civic and community organizations including the Junior League of Greater Utica, the Utica Symphony Orchestra and the Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation. During her years with the Junior League she was one of the founders of the Junior Museum of Oneida County, now the Children's Museum of History, Science and Technology. She enjoyed membership at the Sadaquada Golf Club and the Fort Schuyler Club. Mackie is survived by her devoted husband, Leslie; four beloved children and their spouses, Leslie W., Jr. and Patricia Kernan; Constance and Norbert Gittard; Douglas Kernan and Laura Ipsen; and Martha and Michael Giacobbe; nine cherished grandchildren, Emily K. Hilber and her husband, Aaron; Caroline Kernan, Leslie W., III "Nick" Kernan, Halle, Eliza and Matthew Giacobbe, Lucas, Nina and Logan Kernan; and two step grandchildren, Shaun (Catia) and Patrick Gittard. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Constance and Dana DeNault, sisters-in-law, Katherine Kernan, Mary Angela Kernan and Frances Gilroy, brother-in-law, James S. Kernan, Jr., as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews of whom Mackie was very fond, and numerous loyal and attentive friends to cherish her memory. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Friday, October 5, 4:00-7:00pm at Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, 13 Oxford Road, New Hartford. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 6 at 11:00am at Grace Church, 193 Genesee Street, Utica. Burial will be at St. Agnes Cemetery, Utica. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Oxford Home Care Services and Hospice and Palliative Care for their gentle compassion and care during Mackie's illness. In Mackie's memory, please consider the Grace Church Memorial Fund.
