Joan Ruth Countermine Barber 78 passed away November 17, 2012 at Ellis Hospital with her family by her side from her battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (Leukemia). Joan was born on July 18th 1934 in Rotterdam to the late Marie (Seehase) Countermine and the late Clarence Countermine. She was the step-daughter of the late Edna (Howenstien) Countermine. Joan attended Draper High School and met and married her high school sweetheart and best friend Leonard Barber 59 years ago on November 1, 1953 at the Cobblestone Reformed Church in Rotterdam. Joan held numerous jobs, she worked as a receptionist at Buy Rite Supply Company from 1968- 1971, Northeast Saving Bank in Schenectady from 1981-1990 working data entry, research and was assistant supervisor for the Checking department. She retired at the General Electric Company in 1996 working data entry. Her greatest joy and happiness was spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were her life. No mother ever loved her children more. Joan loved to be with her friends, she was always in charge of arranging lunches with her classmates, the golden oldies; She helped coordinate her high school reunion every year. Joan loved to read and sing. She performed with the Schenectady Melodears barber shop chorus for 14 years and she loved to sing to all her children. She is survived by the love of her life, Leonard T. Barber, her children Wendy Sue (Michael) Rosko of Palmer, Alaska, Richard Alan (Margaret) Barber of Guilderland Center and Lori Lynn (Kenneth)Hazen of Clarksville, her cherished grandchildren, Tara(Lionel) LA Grow of Amsterdam, Theresa (Tristan) Clayton of Guilderland Ctr., Crystal (Jason Rickard) Rafferty of Rotterdam, Nicole (Gavin) Bethel of Commerce, Georgia, Andrew Barber of Guilderland Ctr.,, Bryan Rafferty of Clarksville and Alan Barber of Guilderland Ctr., her beautiful great grand children, Julia Barber Strum, Drake Bethel, Kyia La Grow, Alexander Bethel, Ella Rickard, Payten Rafferty, Jaylynn Rickard, Shay Bethel and Sean La Grow, step grandchildren Aimee Cluever, Amber Rich and Steven Hazen of Greenville, her step great grandchildren Gage and Caden Cluever and Alisa Rich, a brother Clarence (Patricia who she loved like a sister) Countermine, a sister Sandra Garling and several nieces and nephews. Joan was also predeceased by her brother Irving (Ruth) Countermine, sister Thelma (John) Schworm and step-brothers Arthur and Melvin Howenstien. A visitation will be held on Friday evening November 23rd from 6 to 8 pm at Bond Funeral Home, Broadway and Guilderland Ave., Schenectady, NY. Funeral service at the funeral home on Saturday morning at 10 am. Interment in Viewland Cemetery. Joan and her family would like to thank Dr. Jaski, Dr Schlossberg of Riverview Cancer Center and all the wonderful nurses that took such great care of her, Also to all the nurses at St. Clares Fusion Center where she had all her transfusions and joined her in so many great friendships.
