Mary E. Sittig of Utica died July 19, 2013 at the Eastern Star Home. Mary was born December 25, 1928 in Utica, NY, the daughter of George and Cleona (Chapman) Sittig. She graduated from Utica Free Academy in 1948 and complete additional courses at Utica College. For nearly 50 years, Mary worked in the business office of the Utica Newspapers. Prior to her employment at the OD, she worked at Utica Mutual Insurance Company. She was an active member of Trinity (Central) United Methodist Church and served on the Finance Committee for many years. She was also a Past-President of the former OD Credit Union. Mary loved books and was a supporter of the Utica Public Library, where she spent many hours finding a new supply of books to read. She also found pleasure in knitting and made countless afghans, cable and popcorn stitch sweaters, and socks which she generously shared with others. Mary also contributed hundreds of pairs of mittens to the Utica Newspapers Operation Sunshine Christmas campaign. Mary was always ready to lend a helping hand and her acts of kindness touched the lives of numerous people. She leaves many dear friends, including her long time friends, Gwynne E. and James C. Bodle and Carolyn J. Adams. She also leaves a special friend, Robert J. Shepherd. Gwynne and Carolyn thank the entire staff at the Eastern Star Home for their excellent care, love, and genuine concern for Mary's well being throughout her illness. Mary is survived by two nieces and two nephews, Joann Bojdak (Old Forge), Jodi Klenotiz (Utica), James Sittig (Massachusetts), and Jon Sittig (Yorkville). She was predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law, James W. and Irene (Shirley) Sittig and her sister USAF (Ret.) Major Beverly E. Sittig. A memorial service will be held at the Eastern Star Home Chapel, Oriskany, NY on Thursday, at 2:30 p.m. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Eastern Star Home, PO Box 959, Oriskany, NY 13424, Trinity United Methodist Church (Youth Programming) 8595 Westmoreland Rd., Whitesboro, NY 13492, Utica Public Library, 303 Genesee St., Utica, NY 13501, or a charity of your choice.
