R. Michaela French was born in England in 1926, the fourth of five children. She met and married Robert French during World War II and returned with him to live in Schenectady. She raised five daughters before pursuing a career in education. Michaela was a long-time resident of Schenectady's Historic District, where the community, architecture and Mohawk River reminded her of England. Michaela was devoted to the adult learning process and earned several degrees including a doctorate degree in education from the State University of New York at Albany. She worked at the College of Saint Rose, Empire State College and Union College. She retired from Union College in 2004 after a long and rewarding career as the Director of the Union College Adult Lifelong Learning program (UCALL). She was an avid reader and writer and belonged to book and writing groups. She was a published author and served as the editor of the Stockade Spy newspaper for many years. Michaela also enjoyed cooking, photography, the outdoors, and spending time with friends and family.
She was predeceased by Robert French, her daughter, Jennifer French and all of her siblings. She is survived by daughters, Lynne Ferluge (Robert), Christine French (William DeRidder), Katherine Moran (Thomas), Pamela Woythal (Mark); son-in-law, Wayne Metsch; grandchildren, Rachel Ferluge (Joseph DeLeva), Marcus Moran, Adam Moran, Dylan Woythal and Andrew Woythal; sister-in-law, Patrica Ross and many beloved nieces and nephews. A memorial services will be held Wednesday evening , January 9, 2013 at 6 pm at Bond Funeral Home, Broadway at Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady, NY. A visitation will preceed the memorial service at the funeral home from 5 to 6 pm. Her family would like to thank the Teresian House Center for the Elderly for their kindness and caring during her final stages of illness. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Union College's UCALL program, 807 Union Street, Schenectady, 12308.
